        To concretely illustrate the integration of the SalvaTerra photovoltaic planter into an architectural design, we present a simulated case study. The project concerns a luxury sea-view duplex<\/strong> in Liguria-two independent residential units stacked on top of each other, with large panoramic terraces facing southwest. The designer’s goal is to combine contemporary aesthetics, living comfort and excellent environmental performance, aiming for LEED for Homes<\/strong> certification and complying with CAM Building<\/strong> requirements since the building will be acquired by a public body for representative use. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

        The duplex has two main levels (ground floor and second floor), each with outdoor spaces: a garden and poolside on the ground floor, a large sun terrace on the second floor. The seafront location provides unparalleled views but also exposure to brackish winds. The client requires innovative solutions that make the property an example of sustainable luxury<\/strong>, with state-of-the-art facilities and integration of greenery in every room. <\/p>

        Energy-wise, the building is equipped with a traditional rooftop photovoltaic system (5 kWp) and an electric heat pump for air conditioning. The architects also provided 3 SalvaTerra modules<\/strong>: two placed in the garden and one on the terrace on the second floor. These photovoltaic planters, made of corten corten steel with a natural oxidized finish, are integrated from the early design stages both as functional elements and as parts of the architectural language of<\/strong> the house. <\/p>

        The SalvaTerra Photovoltaic Planter installed in a demonstration setting: the two vertical double-sided panels generate energy, while the corten basin accommodates plant essences.         In the duplex, SalvaTerra<\/strong> planters have been used as true architectural furnishing elements.<\/strong> In the garden, two identical modules<\/strong> are placed symmetrically on either side of the infinity pool, creating a vegetal frame that enhances the view of the sea at sunset<\/strong>. The selected species – lavender, prostrate rosemary and santolina – evoke the typical tones of the Mediterranean maquis<\/strong>, contrasting elegantly with the rust corten. The photovoltaic technology, integrated into the design, is almost invisible<\/strong>, hidden behind the lush vegetation.
        As the sun sets, warm LED spotlights<\/strong>, powered bysolar energy stored during the day<\/strong>, illuminate the planters from below, creating a refined lighting setting<\/strong> for evening poolside events. <\/p>

        On the upper floor terrace, a third SalvaTerra planter was strategically<\/strong> placed on the west side<\/strong>, where it serves a dual function: vertical sunshade<\/strong> and visual separator<\/strong> for the lounge area. In summer, when the sun sets low, the modules shield direct glare<\/strong>, allowing the view to be enjoyed in comfort while preserving privacy<\/strong>.
        The lockable wheel system has been embedded in the terrace flooring, making the structure mobile but stable even in high winds.<\/strong> Corten steel dialogues with the building’s other architectural elements – such as bronzed glass parapets<\/strong> and corten-effect cladding – resulting in a consistent<\/strong> and contemporary color palette<\/strong>. The terrace thus takes on the appearance of a hi-tech green penthouse<\/strong>, where aesthetics and sustainability come together with balance. <\/p>

        Technical and energy performance<\/h4>

        Each SalvaTerra planter is equipped with two 450 Wp double-sided modules<\/strong>, for a total of 900 Wp per planter<\/strong>. Based on theaverage annual irradiance in Liguria<\/strong> for vertical installations(814 kWh\/kWp<\/strong>), the estimated annual production per planter<\/strong> is about 732 kWh\/year<\/strong>.
        With three planters installed<\/strong>, total annual production<\/strong> is around 2,197 kWh\/year<\/strong>, energy used to poweroutdoor lighting<\/strong>, a small pump for the ornamental pond<\/strong>, and other auxiliary electrical loads. In summer, the excess is fed into the private home grid<\/strong>, helping to cut down consumption from the public grid. <\/p>

        Environmentally, these planters cover about 14-15% of the annual electricity needs of the duplex<\/strong>, which is supplemented with the5 kWp PV system on the roof<\/strong> and purchase of certified green energy<\/strong> to achieve the goal of 100% from renewable energy (RES).<\/strong>
        The energy contribution of the planters allowed the 10% required LEED credit for on-site renewables<\/strong> to be exceeded, securing the 3 credits fully<\/strong>.
        The integrated vegetation<\/strong> was also accounted for in meeting the LEED requirement for usable green space<\/strong>: combined with the permeable garden, it allowed the required 30% vegetated area quota<\/strong> to be met.<\/p>

        Compliance with CAM and other protocols<\/h4>

        Since the duplex is intended for public use, Building CAM 2022<\/strong> was applied.
        SalvaTerra’s data sheet<\/strong> was attached to the specifications, supporting compliance with regard to:<\/p>

        • Production from on-site renewable sources<\/strong> (Section 2.3.7)<\/p><\/li>

        • Durable, recyclable, paint-free materials<\/strong> (corten steel with more than 30 percent scrap steel, Section 2.4-2.5)<\/p><\/li>

        • Contribution to stormwater management<\/strong> (due to the ability of topsoil to retain water and slow down runoff)<\/p><\/li>

        • Landscape enhancement and outdoor quality<\/strong>, in line with the Itaca Protocol<\/strong>, where planters improved scores in Energy Performance, Site Quality, and Innovation<\/strong>.<\/p><\/li><\/ul>

          The project achieved an overall Itaca score of +3.5<\/strong>, which is +15% above the minimum required by the region<\/strong>.
          From an ESG<\/strong> perspective, the intervention was included in the real estate operator’s sustainability report<\/strong>, which estimated a reduction of ~0.9 tons of CO\u2082\/year<\/strong> due to the energy production of the planters, based on the average national electricity mix.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

            The SalvaTerra planters have become a symbol of the project<\/strong>, attracting the attention of visitors and guests.
            An information tablet at the building’s entrance<\/strong> shows photovoltaic production<\/strong> in real time, thanks to a micro-inverter with Wi-Fi datalogger<\/strong>, making visible the energy benefit<\/strong> derived from what on the surface are simple green furnishings.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

            The SalvaTerra Photovoltaic Planter represents an example of integrated innovation<\/strong> in landscape architecture and engineering-a hybrid element that offers environmental, aesthetic, and technical benefits simultaneously. As we have seen, its targeted use can contribute to the achievement of credits in the major environmental protocols<\/strong> adopted in Europe and Italy-from LEED and BREEAM energy points, to WELL wellness features, to compliance with Minimum Environmental Criteria and Itaca Protocol scores. <\/p>

            In an era when designers and developers are being called upon to meet increasingly ambitious sustainability standards<\/strong>, solutions such as SalvaTerra allow for moving beyond an “additive” approach (solar panels furthermore<\/em> green spaces furthermore<\/em> design) toward a holistic<\/strong> approach: integrating functions to maximize the outcome. This not only improves technical effectiveness (each square meter designed fulfills multiple tasks: produces energy, decorates, shades, etc.), but also facilitates communicating the value of<\/strong> the intervention to end clients and communities. Seeing flowering plants generating electricity concretizes the idea that sustainability is not just about sacrifices or hidden “technical” elements, but can become a visible and pleasant part of everyday experience. <\/p>

            For landscape architecture and engineering professionals, introducing elements such as the photovoltaic planter implies adopting an interdisciplinary mindset<\/strong>: coordination is needed between plant engineering, botany and urban design. But the benefits reward the design effort: flexibility<\/strong> (modules that can be moved as needed), scalability<\/strong> (single or series installations to create entire green photovoltaic screens), access to renewable incentives<\/strong> and deductions, and a new range of creative solutions to enhance open spaces. <\/p>

            Finally, when we consider European policies-from the Green Deal to the requirement for nearly zero-emission buildings-it seems clear that combining green and energy<\/strong> will be one of the design challenges of the near future. SalvaTerra anticipates this trend, demonstrating on a small scale how “when energy becomes beauty, the world is transformed<\/strong>” (to quote the product’s motto). The hope is that similar innovations will find increasing application, transforming cities and buildings into sustainable ecosystems where every element, even a planter, contributes to overall well-being<\/strong>. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
